BMI Formula Explained
Metric Formula:
BMI = weight (kg) / [height (m)]²
Steps to follow:
- Weight in kg
- Height in meters
- Square your height
- Divide your weight by your squared height.
Example:
Weight = 70 kg, Height = 1.75 m
BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9
Imperial Formula:
BMI = weight in pounds / (height in inches)² x 703.
Steps to follow:
- Weight in pounds.
- Height in inches
- Take a square of your height.
- Divide weight by the square of height.
- Multiply the answer by 703.
Example:
Weight = 160 lbs
Height = 5 ft 6 in (which is 66 inches)
Multiply weight by 703
160 × 703 = 112,480
Square the height (in inches)
66 × 66 = 4,356
Divide the two values
BMI = 112480 ÷ 4,356 = 25.8
Health and BMI
BMI is widely used to estimate body fat and related health risks. Checking the BMI after a certain period of time is compulsory. Higher BMI can be alarming, leading to diseases like heart malfunction, diabetes, and high blood pressure, and low BMI can be the seed of undernutrition.
Limitations:
- If you are an athlete and have a high BMI, then it is due to muscles, not fat.
- Pregnant women and seniors require special consideration.
- It does not measure body composition directly.
Despite limits, BMI remains useful for weight loss tracking, fitness planning, and public health screening.
